FAQ

The questions everyone asks.

THE BASICS

What is retail media?+

Retail media is advertising sold by a retailer on its own channels, its website, app, emails, stores and screens, powered by its first-party shopper data. Brands pay to reach shoppers at the point of decision, and the retailer earns a new, high-margin revenue line from an audience it already owns.

What is commerce media and how is it different from retail media?+

Commerce media widens the idea beyond retailers. Any business that owns audience and first-party data at scale, media houses, malls, banks, telcos, airlines, can sell advertising against that data. Aurum Advisory works across both, because the playbook is the same: value the data, build the operation, prove the outcomes.

What is a retail media network?+

A retail media network is the business a retailer builds to sell that advertising: the ad products, technology, rate card, sales function and measurement. It is a media business inside the retail business, and it succeeds or fails on how well it is run, not on how much traffic it has.

Why is retail media growing so fast?+

Because it solves both sides’ biggest problems at once. Advertisers get targeting from real purchase data and measurement tied to actual sales, at a time when third-party signals are disappearing. Retailers get a revenue line with margins their core business cannot match.

How big does a business need to be to launch one?+

Smaller than most assume. Scale helps, but the deciding factors are audience quality, data consent and advertiser demand. A valuation exercise, the way Aurum Advisory opens every engagement, establishes whether the opportunity clears the cost of the operation before anything is built.

DATA MONETISATION

What is data monetisation?+

Data monetisation is turning the data a business already collects into revenue. It can be indirect, using data to improve your own marketing and margins, or direct, building advertising and audience products that brands pay for. The strongest results come from doing both in the right order.

How do companies monetise first-party data?+

Through advertising products on their own channels, through matched audiences activated on external channels, through insight products for brand partners and, where regulation allows, through data licensing. Aurum Advisory sequences these by time to revenue, so channels that need no new infrastructure earn first.

What is our first-party data actually worth?+

It has a findable price. A commercial valuation models what advertisers will pay to reach the audiences your data describes, channel by channel, in conservative, base and aggressive scenarios. Aurum Advisory calibrates every valuation on Gulf operating data rather than imported benchmarks, which is why the number survives board scrutiny.

Can we monetise data without selling it?+

Yes, and you should. Modern data monetisation never hands the data over. Audiences are matched and activated in privacy-safe environments, insights are shared in aggregate and the underlying asset never leaves your control. Any model that requires selling raw data is a model to walk away from.

Is data monetisation legal under UAE and Saudi data protection law?+

Yes, when it is designed for compliance from the start. Consent, aggregation and residency decide what is possible. Aurum Advisory builds engagements so personal data never enters the AI layer and handling aligns with the UAE PDPL and the Saudi PDPL, with a signed data processing agreement before any data flows.

BUILDING A NETWORK

How do we start a retail media network?+

Start with the valuation, not the technology. Price the asset, size the channels, then build only what the numbers justify. Aurum Advisory runs this as a phased engagement, Discover, Define, Design, Deliver, with commercial conversations starting far earlier than most expect.

What technology do we need to launch?+

Less than the vendor pitches suggest. Channels like CRM media and offsite audience activation can launch on systems you already own. An ad server and sponsored product capability follow when the revenue sequence calls for them. Aurum Advisory evaluates every vendor against a 37-point capability matrix, so technology is chosen on evidence rather than demos.

How long does it take to launch a retail media network?+

First revenue can arrive within weeks when the sequence is right, because early channels need no new infrastructure. The full build, ad server, sponsored products, in-store integration, typically lands across the first year in phases, each funded by the revenue before it.

Should we build it ourselves, buy a solution or partner?+

The honest answer depends on your data, your team and your advertiser demand, which is why it should be answered after the valuation, not before. The wrong answer locks in years of cost. The right one is usually a hybrid: own the commercial engine, rent what is commodity.

What are non-endemic advertisers and why do they matter in the GCC?+

Non-endemic advertisers are brands that do not sell in your store, banks, automotive, travel, telecoms, buying access to your audience rather than your shelf. In the Gulf, non-endemic demand often activates first, which is one of the ways this market differs from the imported US playbook.

What margins does retail media deliver?+

Materially higher than core retail. Advertising sold against data and audiences you already own carries the economics of a media business, which is why boards treat a well-run network as a profit engine rather than a marketing side project.

MEASUREMENT AND PROOF

How do we measure retail media ROI?+

Through closed-loop attribution: connecting ad exposure to actual transactions in your own data, so advertisers see the sales their spend produced rather than proxies. It is the single biggest reason retail media wins budgets from other channels.

What is incrementality and why does it matter?+

Incrementality answers the question every CFO asks: what would have happened anyway? Holdout and matched-audience tests isolate the sales a campaign genuinely created. Networks that prove incrementality keep advertiser budgets. Networks that report vanity metrics lose them.

Why do advertisers stop renewing with retail media networks?+

Because the measurement did not hold up. An advertiser pays a premium once on the promise of the audience. They renew on evidence. That is why Aurum Advisory designs measurement in from launch, so every campaign closes with proof, not opinion.

AI AND AGENTIC COMMERCE

What is AI visibility and why should we care?+

AI visibility is how often your business is mentioned, cited and recommended when consumers ask AI assistants and answer engines what to buy. It can be scored, benchmarked against competitors and improved. Aurum Advisory opens every engagement with an AI visibility assessment at no charge.

How will AI shopping agents change retail and commerce media?+

Shopping agents will increasingly compare, choose and complete purchases on the consumer’s behalf, and they buy from data, not from brands. Product feeds, structured markup and queryable inventory decide whether an agent can recommend you at all. Preparing inventory for agentic commerce is now part of any serious network build.

How do we show up in AI answers about our category?+

Give the machines something to cite. Complete structured product data, machine-readable feeds and factual authority content built around the topics AI already answers in your category. Many of the highest-impact fixes cost nothing and land within thirty days.

WORKING WITH AURUM

Who actually does the work?+

Every engagement is led by the practitioner who built the GCC benchmark. No handoffs to juniors.

Do we need new technology first?+

No. The first phase values what you already own and defines what is genuinely required.

How long before revenue?+

Engagements are phased: Discover, Define, Design, Deliver. Commercial conversations with advertisers start earlier than most expect.

Is our data safe?+

Sovereign by design. Your data stays in the residency you choose and never becomes anyone else’s asset.

Do you work outside retail?+

Yes. The playbook transfers to media, malls, banks, travel, health, telcos, any business owning audience and first-party data at scale.

How do we start?+

One question. What is your data worth? A short discovery conversation answers it.
